Mountains
I just started looking at laptops for my son but don’t know anything about them. So, advice is welcomed. I’m leaning towards Dell or Gateway. Any absolutely must have features I need to get? Any great deals you know of right now? Should I get the warranty? 2-yr? 3-yr? Really, any advice to steer me in the right direction would be appreciated. Thanks.

Thank you, [info] for the postcard from Washington, D.C. I love that city; glad you’re home safe and had a great trip. Also, I don’t remember if I ever thanked you for the gift of music. I adore the Decemberists CD and you for sending it to me. Thank you!

Have a great weekend, flist!

You're very welcome. :)

I can't give too much advice re the laptop as mine is a Toshiba, but I think [info]abigail89 has a Gateway laptop. All I can say is, if you buy it from Best Buy, invest in their warranty. It pretty much covers anything that can happen. Good luck!

Don't know about laptops. Only have my desk top computer. First had Gateway now I have a Dell. I like Dell a lot better. And I did get the 3 year warranty. Hope that helps.

I started with a Gateway in '96 (back when they were Gateway 2000!), but switched to Dell in '98 and was happier. Unfortunately, what made Dell #1 in '98 has passed so while they are still the biggest I'm not so sure about their desktops. Laptops I'm not really sure about. They usually vary with more price if you want thinne and lighter, but more affordable if you don't mind it not-so-thin and with regular features.

I just purchased an Averatec this last April, jsut before my Italy trip. First one died in the first week. Second one, I spent $200 extra and got the one wiht the Centrino, and the fancyshmancy gaming card. It's not a common brand in the US, but I think it's fairly cmmone in Europe.

It seems ok. I'm pretty computer ignorant but it's a good deal for the money; comparable laptop from Sony was about $700 more.

My brain is still in Vermont, so if you want more detail, I'll dig it out tommorrow.
